This interactive session explores how system thinking can be applied to identify and address taboo and stigmaassociated with societal problems such as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), mental health, substance abuse, LGBTQ+ issues, and gender-based violence. Participants will learn to use tools like the iceberg modeland causal loop diagrams to uncover systemic factors, analyze stigmas, and develop culturally appropriate strategies to tackle sensitive issues. Drawing on frameworks from System Dynamics Review and The International Journal of Systems Thinking in Education, this session demonstrates how system thinking empowers participants to break down stigmas and engage communities in meaningful dialogue (System Dynamics Review, 2021; The International Journal of Systems Thinking in Education, 2022). To ensure relevance, 4-5 case studies will reflect the demographics and topics chosen by participants, showcasing diverse approaches to combating stigma and taboo in contexts such as South Asia and beyond. Research from Reproductive Health and Culture, Health & Sexuality emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive interventions to dismantle stigma and foster systemic change (Reproductive Health, 2023; Culture, Health & Sexuality, 2023). By the end of the session, participants will have a foundational understanding of system thinking tools, practice applying these tools to analyze stigmatized topics, and gain initial insights into designing strategies to foster open dialogue and community action.
