Susan Sanning is the Associate Dean and Executive Director of Civic Education and Innovation at Grinnell College. Her approach to civic education is shaped by her undergraduate studies in business and her graduate work in women’s studies and liberation theologies. Committed to fostering both individual and collective civic agency, Susan has developed a dynamic model of civic education that empowers students to cultivate their own unique civic identities while building the insight and skills necessary to claim their place in multi-sector, change-making movements. The curricular, co-curricular, and residential learning initiatives she and her team develop are deeply rooted in intentional inclusivity, hope, and a commitment to sustainable, systemic transformation.
